Coffee hour
"Sharon I missed you at Bible study Tuesday," Sandy said while pouring cream into her coffee.
"Thanks, I missed being there. We had to get a tutor for Sean in Spanish. He'll
come on Tuesday and I wanted to be there the first night to meet him. I had no idea Sean was slipping so much until
we go his report card Friday. It was a wakeup call for all of us."
"You didn't know how he was doing?"
"Even Sean says he had no idea," Sharon replied. "How's Jason doing at C.A. did they get
report cards yet?"
"He is doing fine over-all, math continues to be his weak area but we know daily how he's doing
so he gets a lot of support at school and home. Have I told you about the reporting process there? It's amazing!"
"Not really, I know you get information over the computer but that's it."
"Well, if I don't know what's going on with Jason it's because I haven't been doing my
homework. It took Bill and I a few months to figure out our role, but the school was good about helping us out.
Bill is great with it now, he is up on Jason's progress daily, I tend to check-in every few days because I have to
use Jason's computer when he's not. You know, if we haven't checked with-in a week the school e-mails us a reminder."
"Well what do you see when you 'check-in'?"
"Most everything. I can see if he has been late to any classes or missed any homework. I not only
see his grade in each class, I see each assignment grade and know how much it's weighted."
"That's incredible," Sharon interjected. "We wouldn't be in this situation with Sean
if we knew that kind of information."
"It doesn't stop there," Sandy continued. "We get a two-liner from his math teacher each week
just speaking to his effort and performance in class. We get a formal report on those things from every teacher every mid-term, they're call Recognition
Scores. Because of Jason's challenges in math we all agreed small weekly feedback on what's happening in class would be a good idea."
"So is the report card on the computer too?"
"Yes, but it's a lot more than what I think of as a report card. It reports final grades, but then the Recognition scores go
on to report Jason's progress in areas of responsibility and respect. It's like a report card on how he treats himself and others.
Then each class has a skills check-list report. Students work all year on skill areas that can go across all the content in a class. History tracks
oral skills, English writing, Science lab reporting and so on."
"That's incredible, Tom and I will have to look into that."
"Oh, one more thing," Sandy added. "Parents and students fill out online evaluations on the school and teachers twice
a year."
"Wow, do you see the results?"
"Not on teachers or teams, the school uses that for internal growth, but we get a report on the school that includes
how the students are doing on state and national tests too."
